“Tokyo IP Market: Adaptation & Remake” Participating Publishers and Production Companies Announced!

Amid a surge in popular adaptations and remakes of Japanese IP content, including manga, anime, and games, in the global market, "Tokyo Story Market" launched in 2023.

As a market specializing in the buying and selling of adaptation rights for Japanese manga, novels, and other original works, it has created opportunities to match domestic publishers with overseas producers and production companies.

In response to growing demand for Japanese IP from around the world, this year, visual content production companies with remake rights will join the publishers holding the adaptation rights, expanding the range of IP handled, including Japanese manga, novels, and other publications, as well as remake rights, evolving into "Tokyo IP Market: Adaptation& Remake."

This year marks the first time that the market has been re-branded, with six major publishers and production companies participating, including KADOKAWA, Kodansha, SHUFU TO SEIKATSU SHA, SQUARE ENIX, TOEI and NIHONBUNGEISHA. ~Japanese IP (Intellectual Property) Gaining Global Attention~

Japanese manga is one of the most popular genres in the global IP business, serving as a source of global hit content. Japanese novelists, such as Haruki Murakami, who has “Harukists” worldwide, as well as best-selling authors like Keigo Higashino, Miyuki Miyabe, and Kanae Minato, have had works translated into various languages around the world in recent years. Such excellent Japanese IP is currently attracting significant attention from overseas in the content industry.

~Japanese Films and Dramas Reborn as Global Content~
The trend of remaking Japanese films and dramas is also accelerating. Masterpieces are being reborn one after another in various countries. Examples include Yolo, a Chinese remake of the Sakura Ando starring One Hundred Yen Love, which grossed approximately 73 billion yen in China; All of Us Strangers, a British film based on Taichi Yamada's 1988 novel "Strangers" which was nominated for six BAFTA awards; Hollywood's live-action ONE PIECE series, and Spike Lee's re-adaptation of Highest 2 Lowest.

~From "Tokyo Story Market" to "Tokyo IP Market: Adaptation & Remake"~
With the establishment of a global distribution system, excellent IP that was once solely local is now attracting increasing interest from around the world. In response to growing demand for Japanese IP, TIFFCOM will evolve its "Tokyo Story Market," which specialized in adaptation rights, and rebrand it as "Tokyo IP Market: Adaptation & Remake," expanding participation to include visual production companies with remake rights.

Six Japanese companies with original works and visual content in a variety of genres will come together to promote Japanese content overseas, transcending language barriers. In addition, in the morning of October 29th, the first day of the market, an open pitching session will be held for each company, leading to more one-on-one business negotiations.
