[Event Report] “Japan IP Market” Lands at Cannes, Co-Organized by TIFFCOM and the Marché du Film! Film Producers Spotlight Japanese Adaptation and Remake Rights
TIFFCOM, in partnership with the Marché du Film, the film market of the Festival de Cannes, co-organized the “Japan IP Market” in Cannes over three days from May 15 to 17, 2026.
This initiative forms a key pillar of the Marché du Film’s “Japan, Country of Honour 2026” programs, providing a valuable opportunity to directly connect leading Japanese IP holders with international film producers. Serving as the Cannes version of the “Tokyo IP Market: Adaptation & Remake (TIPM)”—a meeting platform at TIFFCOM held in Tokyo in October—it generated significant buzz at the festival.
The event was hosted aboard the prestigious “Art Explora” catamaran docked at Cannes’ Vieux-Port, next to the festival’s main venue, the Palais des Festivals. Seven major Japanese IP holders participated, bringing a curated selection of IPs, including Book-to-Screen Adaptation rights for manga and novels, as well as film remake rights.

Keynote & Panels
To deepen the understanding of Japanese IP, a keynote and panels by key figures from Japan and France were held at the Japan IP Market. In the keynote “The Future of Japanese IP in Global Adaptations,” Tetsu Fujimura (CEO of Filosophia Inc.), known as the Executive Producer of Netflix’s live-action series One Piece took the stage. He spoke about his own experiences, examples of adaptations and remakes, and the global potential of Japanese IP. Furthermore, the latest trends in Hollywood adaptations as of 2026 were introduced one after another, conveying the impressive momentum of Japanese IP.
Industry leaders from France also shared their insights. In the panel “Manga & Anime: Publishers and Broadcasters Driving Success,” featuring Crunchyroll and French publisher Glénat Editions, deep discussions were held on the success factors of Japanese manga and anime IPs. Additionally, in the presentation “From Cult IP to Hit Series: The Success of Cat’s Eyes French Remake,” the French TV network TF1 explained the journey of adapting Cat’s Eyes into a French live-action series, as well as marketing case studies on acquiring fans from new generations.

Pitching Sessions & 1-to-1 Meetings / Networking Events
The Japanese IP holders showcased a lineup ranging from the latest popular manga and best-selling novels to remake rights for masterpieces beloved in Cannes, such as Tokyo Story and Battles Without Honor and Humanity. Open pitching sessions to present each company’s IP were also held, and the venue was enveloped in excitement.
During the meeting hours with the IP holders, film producers and IP scouts from around the world made their way to the venue in search of high-quality Japanese IP, resulting in more than 80 targeted one-on-one business meetings.

Highlights from Participant Feedback
From Japanese IP Holders
“It was a great honor to introduce our works at such an event where overseas production companies gathered together. We hope to make this an opportunity to broaden our knowledge by talking with companies that propose live-action adaptations and new forms of adaptation.”
“I was very happy to feel the strong enthusiasm to work together with Japan. We introduced a wide range of IPs, from old to new, and they were interested in all of them. I’m looking forward to seeing how these will be realized.”
“The pitch event took place after Mr. Fujimura’s keynote, so there were many potential Western licensees in attendance, making it highly rewarding. It was a wonderful opportunity as there were many meetings where we could connect with new people we wouldn’t normally meet at TIFFCOM.”
From International Producers
“I attended this IP market looking for IPs for film adaptations or remakes. I had meetings with three companies: one with a company I already knew and two with companies I met for the first time. I thought it was a pretty good and efficient market. It was a shame that I missed the presentations. I hope I can join in Tokyo.” (Acquisitions, Goodfellas)
“We are based in Paris, France, and produce live-action content. I came looking for films to remake or novels to adapt. I had meetings with three companies, which were very interesting. Some Japanese companies are also looking for French co-producers, so there was interest on both sides. I would love to be invited to attend TIFFCOM in the autumn.” (Producer, Felicity Production)
